Westlaw Edge and Lexis+ AI have been the default legal research tools for UK law firms for decades. They are excellent products โ comprehensive, regularly updated, and trusted. But in 2026, the market has changed. AI-powered alternatives offer capabilities that go significantly beyond traditional legal research, and the cost and compliance picture is worth examining honestly.
Our position: This comparison is written by LegisBox. We have tried to be accurate and fair, but you should treat it as a starting point for your own due diligence, not a definitive assessment. We have a commercial interest in you choosing LegisBox.
1. Cost comparison for a 5-solicitor firm
The numbers below are indicative. Westlaw and Lexis pricing depends on negotiated contracts and the specific modules selected. The LegisBox pricing is fixed and published.
for 5 users
(per-seat pricing)
for 5 users
(per-seat pricing)
firm-wide flat fee
hardware included
The cost differential is significant. But cost is only one dimension. The more important questions are what each product does, and what the compliance implications are.

3. What Westlaw and Lexis do better
In fairness, there are areas where established legal research databases have significant advantages over LegisBox:
- Editorial content โ Westlaw and Lexis include extensive practitioner commentary, Halsbury's Laws, encyclopaedias, practice notes and forms that LegisBox does not replicate. For legal research that requires practitioner guidance rather than primary sources, these remain valuable.
- Depth of historical case law โ both platforms cover significantly more historical case law than the open-access sources (BAILII, Find Case Law) used by LegisBox. For research into older authorities, this matters.
- Citator tools โ Westlaw's Westlaw UK citator and Lexis's Lexis Citations tools allow you to check whether a case has been overruled, distinguished or followed. LegisBox does not currently replicate this functionality.
- Training and support โ both platforms come with extensive training programmes and dedicated account management for larger firms.
4. The compliance gap
The fundamental difference between LegisBox and cloud-based legal research platforms is not capability โ it is compliance architecture.
When you use Westlaw or Lexis to research a point of law, you are not uploading client documents โ you are submitting a search query. The LPP risk in that use case is low. The compliance picture changes significantly if you use these platforms' AI features to analyse documents from your case files.
Both Westlaw Edge and Lexis+ AI now offer features that involve uploading client documents to cloud servers for AI analysis. This is where the LPP and UK GDPR analysis in our other guides applies โ and where LegisBox offers a structurally different solution.
5. The economic case
Beyond cost-per-seat, the economic case for LegisBox rests on three arguments:
- Replacement of junior research time โ LegisBox at ยฃ999/month for a firm of 5โ10 solicitors costs less than one day of a junior associate's time per month. If it saves each solicitor two hours of research time per week, the ROI is straightforward.
- Scope of capability โ Westlaw and Lexis are research tools. LegisBox additionally provides case file analysis, contract review, hearing preparation, CPR deadline management, client portal, time recording, and billing โ capabilities that would otherwise require multiple separate software subscriptions.
- Compliance cost avoidance โ a single SRA investigation or negligence claim arising from a data breach or missed CPR deadline costs far more than LegisBox's annual subscription. The compliance-by-architecture approach eliminates a category of risk entirely.
6. The verdict
If your firm's primary need is deep legal research, including practitioner commentary, historical case law and citator tools, Westlaw Edge and Lexis+ AI remain strong options โ provided you implement appropriate governance for their AI document analysis features.
If your firm needs AI that works across your entire practice โ case file analysis, contract review, hearing preparation, deadline management, billing โ and that does so without any cloud data transfer or LPP risk, LegisBox is the only self-hosted option on the market.
The two approaches are not mutually exclusive. Some firms use both: LegisBox for day-to-day AI-assisted case work, and Westlaw or Lexis for deep research on specific legal questions.
